My name is Oskar L. Howland. I help companies navigate how their products are perceived by customers and find effective ways to communicate the meaning behind what they are doing. I think it is my split roots, between the U.S. and Sweden, that is responsible for my immense curiosity about how differently people can think, work, and talk. All of us see the world in our own way.
An open letter to you, innovators.
The world needs more meaningful business.
Meaningful business is business that isn't just interested in next quarter's profits, but actually making a difference in the lives of people. It is business that wants to make radical improvements to the health and well-being of society. It is business that doesn't believe in shortcuts, or busy-work, or work for the sake of work.
So what is the real meaning behind your business? And how do you put it into words everyone understands?
As you may know, this isn't always so easy. Teams can quickly become misaligned about the kind of product they are building. Customers might request changes and updates to the product, but you're not sure if it fits your vision or not.
If there is one thing I could say to every innovator out there, it is that articulating your product vision, the deeper meaning behind your work, is a project that deserves your full focus. And it needs to be done often. Putting effort into communicating the meaning of your business is what ensures that everything you're saying is true and everyone is heading in the same direction. Otherwise, it's just talk.
